Storm clean-up information for Newton residents.Public Works crews will begin collecting limbs downed in Sunday night’s storm at 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 22. They will start in Street Maintenance Area 1, east of South Pine between SE 14th Street and E First Street. They will work their way through each maintenance area in order (see map). Crews will do one pass down every street.
Residents must stack limbs in neat piles at the curb. This free pickup is for tree limbs only. If trash, lumber, or other bulky items are mixed in with the limbs, they cannot be collected.
Staff plans to collect all limbs this week and will be working longer hours to get this completed before the holiday weekend. As of 10 a.m., Evergy reported about 3,100 customers affected with outages in the county. Butler Electric reported 27 outages.
No injuries have been reported to emergency dispatch due to the storm at this time. Several properties across the county were damaged in the storm. The American Red Cross is coordinating assistance for one family whose home was damaged.
Emergency Management is not allowing controlled burns in the county today. There may be burns at the Harvey County Solid Waste facility as debris is cleared. Limiting burns aids first responders in identifying smoke that may be due to downed power lines.
Several county roads remain closed due to downed power lines or debris. The current list includes, but may not be limited to:
