(Updated Oct. 25, 2021)

The development of vaccines is a monumental step toward reducing the challenges and health concerns created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 16 years old and older. The FDA also has authorized and recommended the Pfizer vaccine for individuals 12-to-15 years old, as well as the two-dose Moderna and one-dose Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccines for individuals 18 and older, through emergency use authorizations.

Along with the initial vaccine series, the FDA has authorize third doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine for immunocompromised individuals. The FDA has also recommended booster doses for certain eligible groups. Eligible individuals that wish to receive a booster dose of vaccine can receive any of the authorized vaccines - they do not have to receive the same vaccine as their previously completed series.

Individuals who received a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and are six months or more past their initial series are eligible for a booster shot if they are 65 years old and older, 18 years old and older and live in a long-term care setting, 18 years old and older and have underlying medical conditions, or are 18 years old and older and work or live in high-risk settings.

Individuals who received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine and are two months or more past their initial vaccination are eligible for a booster shot if they are 18 years old and older.
