Potential hazards could include baseball size hail, 65 MPH high winds and a possible tornado. Reminder that this is coming up this Saturday. Free, easy way to dispose of any old or unneeded medications.National Prescription Drug Take Back Day returns this Saturday! This past fall, just shy of 600,000 pounds of medications were properly disposed of across 4,675 drop-off sites across the country as part of the semiannual event.
You can bring prescriptions you no longer need to the Sheriff's Office, 120 E. Seventh St. in Newton, this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We'll take the medications free of charge, no questions asked (but no needles, please). This event helps ensure these medications are not lost, stolen or misused in our communities.
If you have some medications you've been meaning to discard, come by Saturday and we'll get them disposed of properly.
A road sealing program is scheduled to begin May 1 to resurface two roads. North Meridian Road between West Broadway Street and North Hesston Road will be resurfaced. That's northwest of Newton. Northeast 60th Street between K-15 Highway and U.S. Highway 50 will also be resurfaced, which is west of Walton.
Both roadways will remain open to traffic while the work is underway. Traffic will be controlled and directed by flaggers and pilot car. Residents will continue to have access to their properties throughout.
The sealing program will be completed by Vance Brothers. The projects are anticipated to be done in 10 days, contingent on weather. The Sheriff's Office and other agencies will be participating in a training exercise throughout the day near Walton. Please expect that you may see an increased law enforcement presence in the area, and at times may hear loud noises.
Please know this is simply training, and there is not reason for alarm. Thank you for your understanding.
Wishing all the best to Deb Stoddard as she begins retirement! Deb concluded a 19-year career with the Appraiser's Office today.
Deb was the welcoming greeter and compass for many courthouse visitors, whether they came to visit the office or needed help with directions on where to go. The Stoddards are tremendous public servants, as Deb's husband, Lloyd, also contributed more than two decades of service to our Parks Department.
We'll certainly miss Deb's wealth of knowledge, her warm, cheerful personality and her stopping by to check-in on the staff around the courthouse. The chair may also enter retirement, but we'll take good care of the photo albums. Enjoy retirement!Photos from Harvey County Government's post

Yesterday Burrton Consolidated Fire District #5 celebrated the 50 year career of Jim Redinger. This guy has probably forgotten more about fighting fires than most firefighters know. It was an honor and privilege to be there to congratulate him on his accomplishments. dg
